Preservation Study For Surp Pirgiç Armenian Church In Diyarbakir
Abstract
Diyarbakır is located in the south-eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, in the north of Mesopotamia, also known as Al-Jazira. Inhabited by different ethnic and religious groups, the city played an important role in the early development of Christianity. Most of the churches built by Armenians, who played an important role in the social and political life of the city, have disappeared today. Surp Gregos Church, Catholic Church (Surp Hosep Church), Surp Sargis Church and Sup Pirgiç (Protestant) Churches have survived to the present day in Diyarbakır. Surp Pırgiç Armenian Church is located in Suriçi, Diyarbakır. It was used by the Surp Pırgiç community until 1981. In 2008, the church was restored by the Diyarbakır Regional Directorate of Foundations and was utilised as a rug and carpet weaving workshop. The church was severely damaged as a result of the terrorist conflict that occurred in Suriçi in 2015-2016. Restoration works were restarted between 2017-2020. Within the scope of this study, the conservation practices of Diyarbakır Surp Pırgiç Armenian Church between 2008 and 2020 will be discussed.Surp Pırgiç Armenian Church is located in Suriçi, Diyarbakır. Contemporary restoration principles were adhered to in the conservation and restoration of the Protestant Church, material analyses and approaches to the visible and invisible findings that emerged during dating. The inclusion of the traditional street texture around the Sup Pirgiç (Protestant) Armenian Church and the houses that make up this texture in the conservation planning and their restoration according to their original form will ensure that the urban culture and architectural heritage will be transferred to the future with confidence.
